Schmeckfest is Freeman's best-known annual festival and one of its biggest sources of community pride.
Founded in 1959 and held over two weekends every spring, this "festival of tasting" showcases the sites, sounds and flavors of the Germans from Russia traditions on which this community was established in 1874. From rope making and willow basket weaving to food samples and sales of sausage, cheese pockets, kuchen and other baked goods, the demonstrations offer something for everybody.
Schmeckfest's hallmark events are the traditional German meal served family style to 1,000 guests each of its four nights (pictured) and the evening musical put on by the Freeman community. In 2013, nearly 4,000 guests enjoyed the classic musical, "Fiddler on the Roof." (Pictured)
Many of the Schmeckfest activities are free; advanced tickets are required for both the meal and the musical.
Next year's festival will be held on April 15, 16 and April 22, 23, 2016.
